5 Questions: Surviving (and Thriving) through Homeschooling

This week’s 5 Questions are brought to you by Lori, an amazing woman who wears many hats – wife, mother, entrepreneur, educator. She shares her experience of “surviving life with a positive attitude” while homeschooling her three children.

Why did you pursue this course?

My oldest son was not being challenged enough in school. My other two kids were still little and I thought since I had a teaching degree and had committed to stay home with my kids that I might as well try homeschool. It was not an easy decision because I never had a good opinion about homeschool as a classroom teacher.

Who encouraged and motivated you?

I had several moms that sent me information before I decided to homeschool.

What was an obstacle that you are proud of overcoming?

Realizing that no one has patience enough to homeschool their children, and feeling confident has their educator. I think as a homeschooling mom you think about giving up several times in the first few years. It would just be easier!

When did you realize that you were on the right path?

It seems like you just suddenly look back and realize that you’ve been homeschooling for several (6.5!) years and it’s going great. You realize you love it! You realize your kids love it! And you don’t ever want to let go of the excitement of learning and the freedom of living on your own schedule.

Where did you find inspiration and ideas?

I gather my curriculum from many places. There are so many awesome websites out there. I spend a whole lot of time planning every year. I find something that sparks my interest, especially in science or art, online. Sometimes I find I have way too many great ideas and not enough time. So, I really have to simplify in order to have an achievable school day.

Thanks for sharing Lori!
